Flash Floods in Kuala Lumpur Yesterday

Above (picture courtesy of The Star) is a scenario of cars (parked behind the Putra World Trade Center) being submerged in muddy waters after a thunderstorm in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Thousands of motorists were stuck in massive traffic jams for more than two hours in various parts of the city as flash floods hit Kuala Lumpur.

If one were to be at the junction of Dynasty Hotel on Jalan Ipoh and in the Kampung Baru area, one would have experienced flood waters risng up to 2m. Some motorists had to abandon their cars in the middle of the road when the flood waters threatened to submerge their vehicles.

Badly-hit areas included Jalan Kolam Air, Jalan Union, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Gombak, Bulatan Dato Onn, Segambut and Jalan Tun Razak.

Flood waters began to recede after the Smart Tunnel was closed to traffic to enable flood operations.

And elsewhere in the city, several LRT stations were jam-packed last night when thousands of commuters were stuck for more than an hour due to the RapidKL Kelana Jaya LRT service being halted by a power failure during a storm. Some commuters were stuck in trains and only reached their destinations hours later.

Power was restored gradually from 7.15pm and train service resumed in stages with service returning to normal at 7.47pm.

RapidKL will investigate the cause of the incident.

Hope you were not caught in any one of these. It is pouring again as I am writing this. Let's hope there will not be a repeat performance of yesterday's gloom.

That's one of the reasons why I am so glad I am not working in downtown KL. I hope solution's in place for the terrible flooding.

  3. I am kinda scared to drive to KL after this incident. It took only 2 hours! Just imagine, you are having a meeting in a building in KL, outside it is raining heavily, but you think nothing of it. Suddenly, someone barges into the room and screams that the basement carpark is flooded! You rush down and is shocked to see your car submerged in water! How do you feel about that? I think I will die! Especially when insurance does not cover such incident! There goes my car!

  4. Foong, it is not always like this but when it strikes, it does catch everyone by surprise just like the time when the carpark in Concorde hotel was flooded.

Yeah, I can imagine the feeling seeing ones car being submerged in water.
