Dutch to ban wearing of Muslim burqa in public

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch government agreed on Friday a total ban on the wearing of burqas and other Muslim face veils in public, justifying the move on security grounds.

Immigration Minister Rita Verdonk will now draw up legislation which will result in the Netherlands, once one of Europe's most easy-going nations, imposing some of the continent's toughest laws against concealing the face.

France has banned the Muslim headscarf and other religious garb from state schools while discussion in Britain centres on limiting the full facial veil, or niqab.

Italy has a decades-old law against covering the face in public as an anti-terrorism measure. Some politicians have called for this rule to be enforced against veiled Muslim women.

  1. Well, hell...are they also going to ban ski masks, surgical masks, costume masks, gas masks, work goggles, flight helmets, motorcycle helmets, bandanas or scarves worn around the head? If not, they are HYPOCRITES!

  2. oh oh. I foresee more flag-burning and death threats coming in. They have started a fire which might spread quickly and made themselves a target of unwanted attacks. The move would cause more harm to their security rather than protects it.

  3. Hard to be safe no matter where u r. Governments need to be correct 100% of the time. But terrorists only need to get it right just once to let all hell break loose.

  4. MM, wow! Such gusto. I think they are more concerned about AK47s hidden under the burqas.

Here in Malaysia, crash helmets are not allowed in banks. This ruling was the result of a spate of robberies by robbers in crash helmets some years back.

    YD, let's hope not.

    Mickell, yes, so true.

Are they planning to ban trench coats and long dresses, too, for the same reason? If not, they are HYPOCRITES!
